Spotlight on: GSK and The Orangery

The Orangery is Europe’s first one-acre indoor hydroponic farm, located at GSK on New Oxford Street. It takes an innovative approach to urban dining with a working system that provides ultra-fresh, pesticide-free produce straight to the plate.

GSK’s approach addresses the challenges of food production in growing cities whilst demonstrating a sustainable, scalable model for the future of global farming. Instead of soil, plants thrive in nutrient-rich water, supported by specialised LED lighting.

Beyond offering fresh and nutritious food, Marcia Griffiths, GSK’s Community Manager, has been working closely with CDA to support shared ESG goals. The Orangery now plays a key role in the Mayor’s Hospitality Skills Academy, donating fresh produce to Capital City College and hosting educational visits.

This space offers a unique, immersive experience, enriching learners’ educational experiences through hands-on visits to the farm. Over the next year, Marcia will be hosting sessions for local children and young adults, tailoring their visit to support their curriculum requirements. This is part of GSK’s work to support local charities and SMEs, strengthening commitments to sustainability and delivering positive impact across education, community and the environment.

Thank you GSK for integrating this new technology with the wider community in Holborn and Clerkenwell!
