CEO Article: Circular Economy – ‘A CDA Perspective

This week marks the 5th Year of ‘Circular Economy Week’ and at CDA we wanted to mark the occasion by highlighting what we are doing as a Business Improvement District (BID) to move towards a genuinely Circular Economy.  Working with our businesses and wider stakeholders we are developing and implementing initiatives to meet the three main priorities of the Circular Economy:

  • Design-out waste and pollution
  • Keep products and materials in use
  • Regenerate natural systems

We, as a BID, have become increasingly aware of the need to address environmental issues, for the areas in which we operate and to benefit our businesses, the wider community, London and the UK.

The pandemic has further highlighted the need for good quality outdoor space, so we have made this a priority by introducing more greening at street level into the area and we have six amazing, landscaped roof gardens in the district, with wildflowers and plants – and some with Beehives – that are contributing to local and London wide eco-system.  We are also supporting the Camden Council Tree planting initiative of planting 600 trees a year, to boost tree populations across the borough.

Alongside this we are supporting low traffic neighbourhoods and pedestrianisation – the move towards more cycling and walking which not only benefits the environment but human capital in terms of mental health and wellbeing.

In development is our approach to waste management and freight consolidation. The linear economy in which we currently operate is unsustainable, and although we are moving in the right direction some would say we are not moving fast enough. Using resources efficiently is the best way to protect our environment; ensuring a more healthy and sustainable future not just for the planet but more importantly for our children, our children’s  children’s and future generations.
