Getting to know … Tarik, CDA’s Security Officer

Our Security Team are our eyes and ears, playing a crucial role in supporting safety and security between Tottenham Court Road and Barbican. This month, we sat down with one of our Security Officers, Tarik, to talk about his role at CDA. If you’re interested in expert tips on staying safe in London, security advice for businesses and more intel on the key responsibilities of a security professional – read on!

Q: How long have you been working with Central District Alliance (CDA)?
A: I’ve been at CDA since September 2024, so around seven months.

Q: Can you describe a typical shift at CDA?
A: I work eight-hour shifts patrolling main streets, back streets and businesses. We always split the day into three parts, consisting of three patrols in separate areas of the BID. We patrol in pairs, with two teams during the day and one in the evening. Whilst one team is in Farringdon and Clerkenwell, the other is patrolling Holborn and Bloomsbury. Having built relationships through business check-ins each morning, we are able to adopt a tailored approach for individual businesses. For example, The Post Building on New Oxford Street, requires additional security for their roof terrace. Down the road at independent law firm Mischon de Reya, Kingsway, we support with issues including blocked fire exits, which can be hazardous for employees and visitors.

Q: What are some of the key responsibilities you take care of in your role to ensure the safety and security of the area?
A: Preventable phone and bag theft across London is something I warn people about, especially when they might be engrossed in a conversation with their phone on display. Additional parts of my role as a Security Officer include helping individuals with directions and dealing with any (indoor or outdoor) anti-social behaviour.

Q: What’s one piece of advice you would give to businesses or individuals within CDA to help them enhance their own security awareness?
A: I would advise any individual in central London to be aware of your surroundings and be vigilant. I recommend doing your own risk assessment, to self-assess whether it’s worth being involved in something you may see in public. For businesses, I would recommend being part of CDA’s WhatsApp group. There’s always a team in the area to support your needs and we’re happy to carry out welfare checks when there’s issues. Please contact us to be added to the group – info@centraldistrictalliance.com.

Q: What’s your favourite place (and why) in Holborn / Clerkenwell?
A: Holborn station is definitely the busiest, but I like Russell Square, because I really feel like we’re making a difference there. People come up to us and thank us for being in the area, which makes my day. It’s also a big open space, so you can see everything that’s going on and I can do my job effectively.

Thank you, Tarik, for securing our district and ensuring that employees, visitors and residents feel safe across our neighbourhoods. For more information on our security team and their role, please visit CDA’s Community Safety project page.
