The new St. John Street

We are excited to celebrate the transformation of St John Street in Clerkenwell, as new pedestrian-friendly public realm improvements create a greener, safer and more welcoming environment for businesses, workers and visitors.

The scheme, delivered by Islington Council and partners through the Healthy Streets Everyday II programme, has introduced significant enhancements to the area, including new planting, sustainable urban drainage features and improved spaces designed to encourage people to spend more time enjoying the street.

Representatives from Cross River Partnership and project partners recently visited St John Street for a steering group meeting and site tour, providing an opportunity to experience first-hand the changes that have already been delivered. The introduction of Mediterranean-style planting reflects the need to adapt London’s streets to rising temperatures and changing climate conditions, while helping to create a more attractive and resilient urban environment.

We played a key role throughout the project, working closely with neighbouring businesses to ensure the scheme delivers economic benefits alongside its environmental ambitions. Through ongoing engagement with local occupiers and hospitality venues, the BID has helped businesses prepare to make the most of the enhanced public spaces and the opportunities they present.

With summer underway, the newly transformed street is set to come alive with al fresco dining and outdoor activity, creating a vibrant atmosphere that will encourage people to linger longer and support the local economy.

The project has been made possible through funding from the Mayor of London’s Air Quality Fund Round 4, with Cross River Partnership coordinating delivery alongside local authorities and stakeholders.

The improvements form part of a wider commitment to creating healthier, more sustainable streets across central London, supporting cleaner air, biodiversity and thriving local communities.
